Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal from Chandigarh has scripted history by becoming the first woman flight engineer to be inducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF). Having completed the six-month Flight Engineer course, Jaiswal will now be posted to a helicopter squadron where she will monitor and operate IAF’s complex aircraft in various conditions, right from Siachen Glacier to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In 1977, she became the youngest ever Cabinet Minister in the Government of Haryana at 25 years of age. In 1979, she became State President of Janata Party, Haryana State at the young age of 27. Sushma Swaraj was the first female Spokesperson of a national political party in India.
The six-member monetary policy committee (MPC), headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, decided to reduce key repo rate by 35 basis points to 5.40 per cent from 5.75 per cent on Wednesday with immediate effect. With the fourth cut in a row, the repo rate stands lowest level in the past nine years; RBI trims GDP growth forecast for current fiscal to 6.9 per cent from 7 per cent predicted previously. In January 2014, the repo rate stood at 8 per cent. Since then, it has been revised to 5.40 per cent (including today’s rate cut), a reduction of 2.6 per cent.
State-owned Power Grid Corporation Director (Finance) Kandikuppa Sreekant took charge as the company’s chairman and managing director. Kandikuppa Sreekant assumed the charge of the chairman and managing director of Power Grid Corporation of India. His tenure of Kandikuppa Sreekant will be till December 31, 2023. He was serving as the Director of Finance of Power Grid. He served more than 33 years of experience in the power sector.

The ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which is in an alliance with the BJP in Meghalaya, was granted recognition as a national party by the Election Commission. The NPP becomes the first party from the North East to get the national party status. It is a recognised party in four states of the region. The party has fulfilled the eligibility condition for being a recognised as a national party as laid down in paragraph 6B (iii) (the party is recognized as state party in at least four states). As per the party’s request, the symbol ‘book’ has been allotted to it.
Iran unveiled three precision-guided missiles, with the defence minister saying they show the country is ready to defend itself in the face of US “viciousness and conspiracies”. The new line-up of air-to-air missiles dubbed the “Yasin”, “Balaban” and a new series of the “Ghaem” were developed jointly by the ministry and Sa Iran, also known as Iran Electronics Industries. Defence Minister Brigadier-General Amir Hatami hailed their launch as “another significant achievement of power and dignity for the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
The National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 since 2015. The objective of the day is to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry to the socio economic development of the country. In India, handlooms have emerged as the largest cottage industry with weavers creating products using natural fibres such as cotton, silk and wool. In July 2015, it was decided by the Government of India to celebrate August 7 ever year as the National Handloom Day to revive the roots of handlooms and provide work to weavers. On August 7, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day, at the centenary of Madras University in Chennai
The 5th edition of International Army Scout Masters Competition 2019 has started at Jaisalmer military station in Rajasthan from August 5 to 16. The purpose of the International Army Games (IAG) is to foster military co-operation between the participating nations, develop trust between the armies for the sake of establishing a peaceful society, improving professional training and sharing of best practices being followed by participating nations. The teams from 8 countries viz. India, China, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sudan are participating in the competition. The competition is consists of 5 stages where in Navigation Skills, Endurance, Marksmanship and Team spirit will be evaluated by a panel of international judges, arbitrators, and referees.
A new higher education model has been launched in Rajasthan for distribution of faculties and movable assets among the government colleges at the district level to rationalise the availability of resources. The model will create a pool for sharing of facilities which will benefit the colleges lacking infrastructure. Minister of State for Higher Education Bhanwar Singh Bhati inaugurated the model, titled Resource Assistance for Colleges with Excellence, in the presence of principals of colleges here recently. He said all the colleges would get equal opportunities for imparting quality education with the adoption of the new model.
