Telugu poet Dr. K Siva Reddy has been awarded the prestigious Saraswati Samman 2018 for his collection of poetry titled ‘Pakkaki Ottigilite (Turning Aside While Lying Down)’. The award has been conferred by the KK Birla Foundation & carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
The World Rabies Day (WRD) is celebrated annually on 28th of September to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease. The day also marks the anniversary of the of the death of French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur , who developed the first rabies vaccine. The 2019 theme is ‘Rabies: Vaccinate to Eliminate’.
In Football, India defeated Bangladesh by 2-1 in the final of SAFF Under-18 Championship 2019 to lift the title in Kathmandu on 30th September. This Is India’s first SAFF U-18 trophy. Ninthoinganba Meetei from India was declared Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship.
In Assam, the ‘Plants for Plastic’ campaign has been launched by the Bongaigaon District administration in a bid to gradually collect and remove the harmful plastics from the eco- system. The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to collect and remove plastic from their houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions. Under this unique initiative, any person can deposit 1Kg plastic in the Municipality office and get a valuable sapling for free.
In Tennis, Sumit Nagal from Haryana has won the men’s singles title of 2019 ATP Challenger Tournament at Buenos Aires in Argentina. He defeated local favourite Facundo Bognis in straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 to claim the $54,160 prize money. With this feat, Nagal became first Indian to win on South American clay court. Earlier, Nagal grabbed headlines after he made his Grand Slam debut and produced a spirited fight against the legendary Roger Federer in the first-round of the US Open.
The biggest festival of Nepal – Bada Dashain – has begun at famous Hanumandhoka Dashain Ghar in Kathamndu with Vedic rituals. The 15-day festival starts on first day of Navaratri with Ghatsthapana (traditional urn). Devotees performed Ghatsthapana and sowed maize and barley seeds for germination of the auspicious Jamara (barley shoots) in various parts of the country today. During Dashain, people worship goddess Durga for nine days. On tenth day of festival, elders give golden barley shoots and put Tika on the forehead of younger members of the family and bless them for peace, progress and prosperity in the life.
Recently, India has strongly opposed Pakistan’s propaganda on Kashmir at the General Assembly of 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC-2019) in Uganda’s capital Kampala. The Indian parliamentary delegation was led by the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Earlier, Pakistan had raised the same issue during the 4th South Asian Speakers’ Summit in Male, Maldives. Though, the issues raised by Pakistan were rejected and left out of the Male Declaration .
Noted Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan, a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, has won the M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology. It consists of a citation, trophy and a cheque for Rs 2,51,000.
Viju Khote (77), the veteran Hindi and Marathi film-theatre actor, has passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He had acted in more than 300 Hindi and Marathi films. He gained fame for his character Kaliya in the blockbuster film Sholay. Khote was popular for his comedy roles in many films including ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ and ’Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. His role in TV serial ‘Jaban Sambhal Ke’ also gained popularity.
The floral festival titled ‘Bathukamma’has started in Telangana on 28th September 2019, which is celebrated particularly by the women of state. The 9-day festival takes place towards the end of the monsoon season, just before the onset of winter. Traditionally, Bathukamma is all about worshipping the local goddesses of Telangana and revering to their power during the monsoon season.
