The 2019 Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW) will be observed from 30th October to 4th November

The 2019 Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW) will be observed by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) from 30th October to 4th November, 2019 with theme “Integrity- A way of life”. The Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu will be the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function to be held on 30th October 2019. The purpose of observing VAW is to educate the public at large about the corruption related practices and also educating them how to report about it.

The Government of India (GoI), Government of Odisha and the World Bank have recently signed a US$165 million loan agreement

The Government of India (GoI), Government of Odisha and the World Bank have recently signed a US$165 million loan agreement to support 125,000 smallholder farmers from 15 districts of  the state. The project will strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers against adverse climate by improving access to resilient seed varieties and production technologies, diversifying towards more climate-resilient crops, and improving access to better water management and irrigation services.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is one of the 7 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of India. Under the CRPF Act, the ITBP was raised on 24th October 1962 in the wake of the Sino-Indian War of 1962. Recently, the 58th Raising Day of ITBP is recently observed on 24th October 2019 to commemorate the valor and achievements of the ITBP and to boost the morale of the force personnel.

On the occasion of Dhanteras, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana to empower the girl child

On the occasion of Dhanteras, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana to empower the girl child. As per the scheme, an amount of Rs 15,000 will be provided to every family in which a girl child takes birth. The state government will direct transfer funds in the account of the registered girls in a phased manner when a girl child will complete various achievements, like vaccination, admission in class 1, 5 and 9, graduation.

K R Wadhwaney , the veteran sports journalist and author, has passed away in Delhi

K R Wadhwaney (90), the veteran sports journalist and author, has passed away in Delhi. Born in Karachi (now in Pakistan), migrated to Lucknow after the partition in 1947. He started his career in Lucknow before moving to New Delhi in the 1960s. He remained active as a sports journalist for almost 50 years. After working in top organisations, he later went on to become the Sports Editor of the Indian Express newspaper. He worked as a freelance writer for several Indian newspapers after his retirement.

The major part of the famous Mahastupa of the 2,000-year-old Buddhist heritage site of Thotlakonda has recently damaged due to heavy rains in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The dome of the Mahastupa is belonged to Heena Yana stream of Buddhism. The site is a prominent tourist spot with remnants of stupas, chaitya grihas and viharas atop Thotlakonda. It was the epi-centre for spreading Buddhism in other countries like Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia, etc.

Ilham Tohti, an academic jailed for separatism in China, has been awarded the European Parliament’s top human rights prize ‘Sakharov’

Ilham Tohti, an academic jailed for separatism in China, has been awarded the European Parliament’s top human rights prize ‘Sakharov’  in recognition for drawing attention to ethnic tensions in Xinjiang. Tohti is from the Uighur minority & has been a fierce critic of China’s treatment of the Uighur people. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 on separatism charges. The move will pointedly rebuked China’s treatment of the Muslim ethnic minority and may draw a reprisal from Beijing.
