International Day for Disaster Reduction promotes a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction

International Day for Disaster Reduction promotes a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction by celebrating how people around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters. This year’s theme is based on one Target of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030: ‘Substantially reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of services through developing resilience by 2030’.

Bishan Singh Bedi, the former Indian captain and spin legend, was honoured with the Dr.M.A.Chidambaram Birth Centenary Award, at a grand function here on Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The program was instituted by MAC Charities in memory of the former BCCI president.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is all set to be named the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after he filed his nomination for the top job on Monday in Mumbai. Sourav Ganguly was the lone candidate applying for the job and is set to be elected unopposed as the president. The Bengal stalwart was accompanied by former BCCI and ICC chief N Srinivasan, Niranjan Shah and Rajeev Shukla as he went to submit his papers at the board headquarters.

32nd World Conference of World Union of Wholesale Markets was held in Gurugram

The two-day 32nd World Conference of World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM), aimed at exchanging information and knowledge regarding wholesale and retail markets will begin on Thursday at Gurugram .The conference would be  inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Purushottam Rupala. Total 18 countries from five continents, embassies and diplomatic officers from 16 countries and over 50 Indian delegates from different State Agricultural Marketing Boards of India will be participating. Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, OP Dhankar, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Sanjay Aggarwal, Chairman WUWM, Zengjun Ma, will be present in the opening ceremony.

India and Australia on Wednesday held the second ‘2+2’ secretary-level dialogue in Canberra during which key issues related to their strategic and defence ties were discussed and the two countries underlined the need for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra held the Foreign Secretaries and Defence Secretaries dialogue with their Australian counterparts — Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Frances Adamson and Secretary of Defence Greg Moriarty.

Arun Kumar Rath, CEO of SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant, Thursday took charge as the new CEO of Bhilai Steel plant, two days after a major fire accident at the SAIL unit which has so far claimed 13 lives. Rath has replaced M Ravi who was removed.

World Migratory Bird Day is observed twice a year during the second Saturday in May and again on the second Saturday in October. The goal is to raise awareness of issues affecting migratory birds and to inspire action around the world to take measures for their conservation.

India ranked 6th in global RTI rating

India ranked 6th in global RTI rating. According to the RTI rating by Access Info Europe and the Centre for Law and Democracy, India ranked at 6th position out of 123 countries, after a downfall of 4 positions from the previous year. The survey was carried by Transparency International India.

The World Bank has announced that it will provide around USD 195 million concessional loan to Nepal

The World Bank has announced that it will provide around USD 195 million concessional loan to Nepal to reform the country’s financial and energy sectors.

An agreement to this effect was reached during the ongoing annual meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Bali in Indonesia, according to officials. Chief of International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division (IECCD) at the Ministry of Finance, Krishna Nepal and the World Bank’s Country Director for Nepal, Qimiao Fan inked the agreement in the presence of Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada and Vice-Chairperson of the World Bank for South Asian region, Hartwig Schafer.
