Alejandro Giammattei elected as Guatemala’s new president

Alejandro Giammattei has been elected as new president of Guatemala. He defeated former first lady Sandra Torres for the president’s seat. Giammattei will succeed corruption tainted outgoing President Jimmy Morales. Alejandro Giammattei, who looks to have secured nearly 60% of the vote in Sunday’s poll, has been outspoken in his opposition to a migration deal that his predecessor, Jimmy Morales, signed with the United States last month.

For Guatemalans, the result will probably be more of the same: another president who promises to combat corruption and bring an economic revival, but struggles or fails to alter the status quo on either, like Morales.

IIT Kharagpur researchers develop low-cost blood test device

In a recent development, the researchers at IIT Kharagpur have made us proud as they have successfully developed a low-cost device that will be used in testing blood. It is interesting that the newly built device can perform in an efficient manner all the tests. Also, the amount of blood that the device needs is low and it can operate even with the blood that it can get with a simple finger prick. The device is so good that it needs a small kit to operate. The operational thing that is required for the device is a kit connected to a smart phone.

With its smart set-up, the device will analyse the functions. The LED light of the smart phone is used for the purpose of imaging. The device is not only efficient , but of low cost also. The cost effectiveness of this device makes it awesome. If we talk about the operation of this device, then it needs a single drop of blood of the patient and the chemical used to perform the test. The efficiency and the function of the device will be harnessed commercially and it will prove to be the best in the business, believes the team of the researchers.

Air India first flight over North Pole from Delhi to San Francisco

Air India will soon become the first Indian airline to fly over the North Pole while connecting New Delhi and North America.

The inaugural flight over the Polar region will take flight on the nation’s Independence Day, August 15, 2019 and will fly from New Delhi to San Francisco.

The flight, according to the airline, will be piloted by Capt Rajneesh Sharma and Capt Digvijay.

This will be one big achievement for the civil aviation in India as none of the Indian airlines has ever done this.

According to the airline, passengers will benefit from the reduced flight times, the airline by conserving fuel, reduce travel times, improve aircraft utility and reduce carbon emission.

The fuel savings are expected be in the region of 2000 kgs to 7000 kgs on these routes with the resultant decrease in carbon emission of 6000 kg to 21000 kg, per flight.

The flight path over the North Pole though comes with unique opportunities, it also presents unique challenges. Area of Magnetic Unreliability, limited choice for diversion alternate airports, solar radiation, fuel freezing and passenger and aircraft retrieval in case of diversion are some of those factors.

Currently, the route that the New Delhi to San Francisco flight takes goes over Bangladesh, Myanmar, China and Japan before crossing the Pacific Ocean to enter the United States of America.

However, the new route would save around 90 minutes, making the travel time around 15.5 hours. This route would include flying over Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, the Arctic Ocean, Canada and then entering the US.
