DAILY VOCABULARY FOR 15TH JANUARY 2022

1. Turnaround (Noun) –

  • Definition: An abrupt or unexpected change, especially one that results in a more favourable situation.
  • Synonyms: About-face, About-turn
  • Antonyms: Approval, Enactment, Validation
  • Usage:  the progress of business was due to the abrupt turnaround.

2. Acquire (Verb)

  • Definition: Buy or obtain (an asset or object) for oneself.
  • Synonyms: Obtain, Come by, Come to have, Get, Receive, Gain, Earn, Win
  • Antonyms: Lose, Part with
  • Usage: The Centre’s request to the Supreme Court to allow it to return the “superfluous land” it had acquired around the disputed site in Ayodhya in 1993 is not innocuous.

3. Demolition (Noun)

  • Definition: The action or process of demolishing or being demolished.
  • Synonyms: Destruction, Knocking down,
  • Antonyms: Construction, Confirmation
  • Usage: The court had ordered that the status quo be maintained on the entire extent of 67.7 acres acquired in the aftermath of the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

4. Conceal (Verb)

  • Definition: Not allow to be seen; hide.
  • Synonyms: Hide, Keep out of sight, Keep hidden, Secrete
  • Antonyms: Reveal, Expose
  • Usage: Behind the apparently equitable argument that an extent of land not in dispute can be given back to its original owners is a barely concealed political motive.

5. Palpable (Adjective) –

  • Definition: (of a feeling or atmosphere) so intense as to seem almost tangible. Synonyms: Perceptible, Perceivable, Visible, Noticeable
  • Antonyms: Intangible, Imperceptible
  • Usage: The sense of anxiety among the supporters of the Mandir cause over the delay in the adjudicatory process is palpable.

6. Mollify (Verb)

  • Definition: Appease the anger or anxiety of (someone).
  • Synonyms: Appease, Placate, Pacify, Conciliate,
  • Antonyms: Enrage
  • Usage: It is to address this anxiety and mollify elements that are unhappy with the progress of the judicial process that the government wants the court to vacate its status quo order.

7. Provocative (Adjective)

  • Definition: Causing anger or another strong reaction, especially deliberately.
  • Synonyms: Annoying, Irritating, Exasperating, Infuriating
  • Antonyms: Soothing, Calming
  • Usage: A trust dedicated to the cause of constructing a temple to Ram on the site where the demolished Babri Masjid stood, will be needlessly provocative.

8. Demonstrable (Verb) –

  • Definition: Clearly apparent or capable of being logically proved.
  • Synonyms: Verifiable, Provable, Attestable, Evincible
  • Antonyms: Unverifiable
  • Usage: The campaign to demolish the mosque, from the Kalyan Singh government, whose actions were demonstrably anti-secular.

9. Vicinity (Noun)

  • Definition: The area near or surrounding a particular place.
  • Synonyms: Neighbourhood, Locality, Locale
  • Antonyms: Foreign
  • Usage: There is a case for reconsidering the lease, but nothing at all for this organisation to be given the opportunity to gather its resources in the vicinity of the disputed site.

10. Forefront (Noun)

  • Definition: The leading or most important position or place.
  • Synonyms: Vanguard, Van, Spearhead, Head, Lead
  • Antonyms: Rear, Background
  • Usage: The U.S. Federal Reserve has been at the forefront of the current tightening cycle.
