1. Agnostic : noun

  • Meaning : who believes that God or creation of the universe cannot be known(not to be confused with Atheist: who doesn’t believe in God)
  • Synonyms: sceptic, questioner
  • Antonyms: believer
  • Usage : He was a scientist and therefore, an agnostic.

2. Bully : verb, noun

  • Meaning : someone who oppresses or teases in a forcible manner on people who are lower in
  • position, or the act of oppressing and teasing weaker section
  • Synonyms: intimidate, tyrant/tyrannize
  • Antonym: support/supporter, pamper
  • Usage : John is a bully who disturbs young boys in his school.

3. Glum : verb

  • Meaning : being sad
  • Synonyms : miserable, downcast
  • Antonyms: cheerful, happy
  • Usage : She worked hard yet she couldn’t pass the exam and this is why she is glum.

4. Gruelling : adjective

  • Meaning: which is tiring
  • Synonyms: exhausting, strenuous
  • Antonyms: easy, light
  • Usage: He had a gruelling five hours walk to the hills.

5. Hypochondriac: adjective

  • Meaning: one who is obsessed with their health, worries about illness
  • Synonyms: malingering
  • Antonyms : carefree
  • Usage : Old people are often hypochondriac.

6. Inflate : verb

  • Meaning: (for things) to pump up, to exaggerate something
  • Synonyms : amplify, expand
  • Antonyms: flattened, cut short/reduce
  • Usage : He always inflates his stories of achievements.

7. Lousy : adjective

  • Meaning : which is lowly, degraded
  • Synonyms : mean, despicable
  • Antonyms: great, high
  • Usage : He played a lousy trick on his friend which earned him a bad repute

8. Magnate : noun

  • Meaning : a tycoon or baron
  • Synonyms: executive, captain of industry
  • Antonyms : commoner
  • Usage : The Ambani’s is the magnate of the Jio companies

9. Magnanimous : adjective

  • Meaning: who is very generous or does charity
  • Synonyms : benevolent , big-hearted
  • Antonyms : mean, selfish
  • Usage : He was not rich but was magnanimous.

10. Ornate : adjective

  • Meaning : which is very elaborately designed and decorated
  • Synonyms : embellished, fancy
  • Antonyms: plain, simple
  • Usage : The girl wore ornate jewellery in her wedding.
