  1. SUPERANNUATED (Adjective)
    Meaning: outdated or obsolete through age or new developments.
    Synonyms: antiquated, defunct, obsolete.
    Antonyms: modern, modish, newfangled, modernized.
    Example: We realized the baking soda we used in baking was superannuated when our cake didn’t rise.
  2. INTERDICT (Noun)
    Meaning: to ban or prohibit.
    Synonym: prohibition, ban, bar, veto, proscription,
    Antonym: corroborate, support
    Usage: The jeweler tries to interdict theft by having guards stationed throughout the store.
  3. ADJUDICATE (Verb)
    Meaning: to make an official decision about who is right in a dispute.
    Synonym: adjudge, judge, arbitrate, decide, determine.
    Antonym: hesitate, defer, dodge, ignore.
    Usage: The administrative board will adjudicate on the terms of the doctor’s suspension for misconduct.
  4. STAMPEDE (Noun)
    Meaning: an unexpected movement of a group or to rush rowdily in a state of panic.
    Synonyms: rush, flight, rout, scattering.
    Antonyms: retreat, standing.
    Usage: Since the store has only a few copies of the popular videogame, its manager is expecting a stampede when the doors are opened.
  5. SETBACK (Noun)
    Meaning: A reversal or check in progress.
    Synonyms: difficulty, mishap, hitch, complication.
    Antonyms: breakthrough, assistance, headway.
    Usage: The principal lost his job, creating a financial setback for a few months until he found another one.
  6. CONTRITION (Noun)
    Meaning: the state of feeling sorry for bad behavior; the state of repentance.

  7. AMELIORATE (Verb)
    Meaning: To make better
    Synonyms: Amend, better, improve, upgrade
    Antonyms: worsen, reduce, diminish
    Example: Ameliorate the relationship with your distant mother by sending a letter.
  8. INCIPIENT (Adjective)
    Meaning: in the beginning stages.
    Synonym: nascent, basic, beginning, commencing,
    Antonym: developed, grown, mature
    Example: Since the rumor is incipient, we can stop it by telling the truth immediately.
  9. NEPOTISM (Noun)
    Meaning: the act of giving opportunities to others simply because of a personal relationship.
    Synonym: partisanship, patronage
    Antonym: impartiality
    Usage: Jyoti has no computer or clerical skills so the only way she could have received that position was through nepotism.
  10. PREPONDERANT (Adjective)
    Meaning: predominant in influence, number, or importance; influential and powerful.
    Synonym: predominant, prevalent
    Antonym: unusual, unwonted
    Usage: Napoleon would not have won quite so many battles without his preponderant and massive naval forces.
  11. IDIOMS
    anything but
    Meaning: by no means
    Example: We went to see that new action film on Thursday night and it was anything but good, in fact, I fell asleep.
