  1. PRAGMATISM (Noun)
    Meaning: the quality of dealing with a problem in a sensible way rather than following fixed theories.
    Synonyms: prudence, expediency, practicality.
    Antonyms: idealism, impracticality, timidity.
    Usage: Detectives often practice pragmatism on a case by using common sense and cause and effect techniques to determine who is a suspect.
  2. BOLSTER (Verb)
    Meaning: to make something stronger or bolder.
    Synonyms: strengthen, support, reinforce, boost
    Antonyms: undermine
    Usage: Raising your voice is not a good way to bolster your position during an argument.
  3. ABET (Verb)
    Meaning: encourage or assist (someone) to do something wrong.
    Synonyms: foment, incite, instigate, provoke.
    Antonyms: constrain, restrain, allay, soothe.
    Usage: The grandmother was arrested for trying to abet her grandson, a prison escapee.
  4. BUCOLIC (Adjective)
    Meaning: relating to the pleasant aspects of the countryside and country life.
    Synonyms: rustic, rural, pastoral, country
    Antonyms: urban
    Usage: Even though I was born in the city, I still prefer the quiet of a small bucolic village any day.
  5. ENFEEBLEMENT (Noun)
    Meaning: a gradual sinking and wasting away of mind or body.
    Synonym: decaying, decline, degeneration, descent,
    Antonym: comeback, improvement, rally, recovery,
    Usage: He was now over fifty and his sight showed serious symptoms of enfeeblement.
  6. COMMENCE (Verb)
    Meaning: to start an event or work.
    Synonyms: began, inaugurate, start, launch, arise.
    Antonyms: close, end, finish, conclude, complete.
    Sentence: The Saturday workshop will commence exactly at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. sharp.
  7. SLAMMED (Verb)
    Meaning: shut or crtiticize forcefully or loudly.
    Synonyms: smash, slap, criticize, beat, knock, strike.
    Antonyms: praise, aid, assist, open.
    Sentence: The little girl accidentally slammed her hand in the door, crushing her fingers under its weight.
  8. FIERY (Adjective)
    Meaning: consisting of fire or burning strongly and brightly.
    Synonym: burning, blazing
    Antonym: bland, indifferent
    Usage: The depressed teenager said that he wanted to die in a fiery explosion that would blow up his school.
  9. ETCHING (Noun)
    Meaning: a print produced by the process of etching.
    Synonym: engraving, print,
    Antonym: erase, expunge, obliterate.
    Usage: There are three types of patterns formed by acid-etching.
  10. AXIOMATIC (Adjective)
    Meaning: evident without proof or argument.
    Synonym: understood, given, granted, self-evident
    Antonym: misunderstood, uncertain
    Usage: There was a time when it was regarded as axiomatic that the sun revolves around the earth.
  11. IDIOMS
    Dead wood
    Meaning: People or things which are no longer useful or necessary.
    Example: The company bought in a lot of new computers. They no longer want the dead woods.

    Get the axe
    Meaning: lose the job.
    Example: The projects team was undergoing a major restructuring, recruitment executives were the first to get the axe.

    Plum job
    Meaning: Desirable position which is well-paid and considered relatively easy.
    Example: This looks like a plum job but it has its own bunch of complications.
