DAILY VOCABULARY FOR 17TH OCTOBER

  1. ABATE (Verb) –
    Meaning: to reduce in degree or intensity.
    Synonyms: subside, die down/away/out, drop off/away.
    Antonyms: intensify, advance, extend, develop.
    Example: I hope this medicine will abate the pain in my leg.
  2. RESCIND (Verb) –
    Meaning: revoke, cancel, or repeal (a law, order, or agreement), to take back or control.
    Synonyms: revoke, repeal, cancel, reverse, abrogate.
    Antonyms: enforce, enact.
    Example: Once their union demands were met, the workers agreed to rescind the strike.
  3. SULLEN (Adjective) :
    Meaning: bad-tempered, sulky and gloomy.
    Synonyms: morose, resentful, glum, frowning, grumpy.
    Antonyms: agreeable, bright, cheerful, friendly, gentle.
    Example: When my toddler is sullen, he can usually be cheered by music.
  4. MAGNANIMOUS (Adjective) :
    Meaning: generous or forgiving, especially towards a rival or less powerful person.
    Synonyms: benevolent, philanthropic, chivalrous.
    Antonyms: stingy, selfish, uncharitable.
    Example: Even though the defendant had broken the law, the magnanimous judge gave him the lightest sentence possible.
  5. ODIOUS (Adjective) :
    Meaning: extremely unpleasant; repulsive.
    Synonyms: revolting, repulsive, repellent, repugnant.
    Antonyms: delightful, pleasant, agreeable, charming.
    Example: The athlete got arrested for participating in the odious sport of dog fighting.
  6. PROGRESSIVE (Adjective)
    Meaning: continuing or increasing.
    Synonyms: liberal, advanved.
    Antonyms: conservative.
    Example: As the progressive disease got worse every month, my doctor recommended that I be admitted to the hospital.
  7. HAVOC (Noun)
    Meaning: extensive destruction or devastation
    Synonyms: chaos, disruption
    Antonyms: peace
    Example: The volcano inflicted havoc upon the tiny village.
  8. PEAK (Adjective)
    Meaning: maximum
    Synonyms: maximal, top
    Antonyms: minimum
    Example: Traffic reaches its peak between 9 and 10 in the morning.
  9. FLOUT (Verb)
    Meaning: defy, to intentionally disobey (a law, rule, convention)
    Synonyms: go against, scorn
    Antonyms: observe
    Example: People find themselves in trouble because they think they’re clever enough to flout the law without getting caught.
  10. BITTERSWEET (Adjective)
    Meaning: something that offers both joy and pain or the tastes of sweet and bitter together.
    Synonyms: tangerine
    Antonyms: happiness
    Example: Because the movie was bittersweet, I found myself laughing and crying in the theater.
  11. IDIOMS
    “Fat is in the fire”

    FOOD IDIOM
    Meaning: Big problem or trouble ahead.
    Usage: When she discovered his lies, there was fat in the fire.

    “Goose is cooked”
    FOOD IDIOM
    Meaning: Finished or in trouble.
    Usage: When my parents found out that I wrecked the car, I knew my goose was cooked.

    “Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth”
    FOOD IDIOM
    Meaning: A project works best if there is input from a limited number of people.
    Usage: Let’s divide the project staff into small teams. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
