DAILY VOCABULARY FOR 5TH JULY

1. AMELIORATE (verb) : make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.

Synonyms: better, amend, elevate

Antonyms: worsen,decline, blemish

Example Sentence:

The reform did much to ameliorate living standards.

2. STODGY (adjective) : dull and uninspired; lacking originality or excitement.

Synonyms: unimaginative, uninspired, unexciting, monotonous

Antonyms: exciting, entertaining, digestible

Example Sentence:

Neither company has succeeded in shedding its stodgy image.

3. VEXATIOUS (adjective) : Causing or tending to cause annoyance, frustration, or worry.

Synonyms: irritating, irksome, displeasing, infuriating

Antonyms: helpful, pleasing, soothing

Example Sentence:

The slavery question presented vexatious difficulties in conducting the war.

4.  IRIDESCENT (adjective) : Showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles.

Synonyms: shining, glittering, sparkling, shimmering

Antonyms: colorless, dull, plain, fixed

Example Sentence:

The cream colored siding looked iridescent in the moonlight.

5. PRUNE (verb) : Trim (a tree, shrub, or bush) by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stems, especially to encourage growth.

Synonyms:  reduce, cut/trim, decrease.

Antonyms: extend, lengthen

Example Sentence:

Ideally, you should start pruning your tree to limit its size before it reaches full size.

6.REGNANT (adjective) :reigning; ruling.

Synonyms: dominant, governing, rampant

Antonyms: powerless, ineffectual, inadequate

Example Sentence:

A queen regnant possesses and exercises sovereign powers.

7. DISTRAIT (adjective) : distracted or absent-minded.

Synonyms: engrossed, forgetful, inattentive.

Antonyms: concentrating, attentive, focused.

Example Sentence:

He grew more and more distrait as hours passed without confirmation that there were survivors of the plane crash.

8. BENIGNANT (adjective) : having or marked by sympathy and consideration for others.

Synonyms: benevolent, compassionate, humane.

Antonyms: atrocious, brutal, callous, fiendish.

Example Sentence:

The queen had a benignant reputation and was loved for her caring treatment of others.

9.DISSEMBLE (verb) : conceal or disguise one’s true feelings or beliefs.

Synonyms: dissimulate, feign, masquerade, counterfeit.

Antonyms: expose, unveil, reveal, exhibit.

Example Sentence:

The con man did his best to dissemble his real motives from the wealthy widow.

10.FARRAGO (noun) : a confused mixture.

Synonyms: mishmash, jumble, hodgepodge, turmoil.

Antonyms: constituent, ravel, sequence, categorization.

Example Sentence:
