MONOLOGUE

Meaning: a long speech by one actor in a play or film, or as part of a theatrical or broadcast programme.

Synonyms: soliloquy, speech, recitation, lecture

Antonyms: dialogue, conversation

Usage in a sentence: The comedian is famous for his monologue about winning the lottery.

 

ESTABLISHMENT

Meaning: a.the action of establishing something or being established. b. a business organization, public institution, or household.

Synonyms: creation, institution, organization, development, enterprise, business

Antonyms: abolition, annulment, dissolution

Usage in a Sentence: His novels were disliked by the literary establishment.

 

FORGE

Meaning: a. make or shape (a metal object) by heating it in a fire or furnace and hammering it.

Synonyms: falsify, fabricate, shape, fake

Antonyms: destroy, abolish, recede

Usage in a sentence: The programme aims to forge links between higher education and small businesses.

 

PURLOIN (VERB)

Meaning: steal (something).

Synonyms: loot, pilfer, steal, embezzle.

Antonyms: bestow, contribute, donate, purchase.

Usage: Sometimes it’s impossible to not purloin an excerpt from another person’s blog.

 

REPROBATE (NOUN)

Meaning: an unprincipled person.

Synonyms: rogue, scoundrel, villain, wretch.

Antonyms: upright, virtuous, principled, righteous

Usage: Although the old man pretended to be a reprobate in public, in private he did a lot of good deeds for the homeless.

 

RAVENOUS (ADJECTIVE)

Meaning: (of hunger or need) very great; voracious.

Synonyms: insatiable, greedy, gluttonous, edacious.

Antonyms: content, sated, satiated, satisfied.

Usage: No matter what type of stressful situation I’m facing, my body responds by eating everything in sight because of my ravenous appetite.

 

DILATORY (ADJECTIVE)

Meaning: slow to act

Synonyms: sluggish, slothful, lax, slack.

Antonyms: fast, prompt, brisk, quick.

Usage: They were dilatory in providing the researchers with information.

 

 

PUMMEL(VERB)

Meaning: to defeat someone easily at a sport

Synonyms: bash, batter

Antonyms: compliment, fail

Usage: The boxer had pummeled his opponent into submission by the end of the fourth round.

 

 

SCALDING(ADJECTIVE)

Meaning: If a liquid is scalding, it is extremely hot

Synonyms: blazing, blistering

Antonyms: cold, cool

Usage: Against her will, hot scalding tears burst from her eyes and down her cheeks.

 

 

ABOMINATE(VERB)

Meaning: to hate something very much

Synonyms: abhor, despise

Antonyms: admire, approve

Usage: Eventually one has to bring people together and sit down with those whose records one abominates.
