1. abortive (adjective) – निष्फल
Pronunciation: abo-tiv
Meaning: failing to produce the intended result
Synonyms: failed, unsuccessful, non-successful, vain, thwarted, futile, useless, worthless, ineffective, ineffectual
Antonyms: successful, fruitful
Usage: The surgery was abortive and did not repair the damage to the man’s heart.

2. peevish (adjective) – झगड़ालू, फ़साद-पसंद
Pronunciation: pee-vish
Meaning: having or showing an irritable disposition
Synonyms: irritable, irascible, fractious, fretful, cross, petulant
Antonyms: affable, easy-going
Usage: She stared at me with a peevish expression on her face.

3. pedantic (adjective) – पूर्ण सावधान
Pronunciation: pi-dan-tik
Meaning: excessively concerned with minor details or rules
Synonyms: overscrupulous, scrupulous, over-exacting, perfectionist, precisionist, punctilious, meticulous
Usage: As a grammar teacher, it is hard for me to not review everything with a pedantic eye.

4. ascetic (adjective, noun) – मुनि, आत्मसंयमी
Pronunciation: asetik
Meaning: characterized by severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons; a person who follows an ascetic life
Synonyms: austere, abstinent, abstemious, non-indulgent, self-disciplined; recluse, hermit, solitary, anchorite, anchoress
Antonyms: sybaritic, sybarite
Usage:

  • The first four gurus led simple ascetic lives and were regardless of wordly affairs. (adjective)
  • He lived as an ascetic. (noun)

5. quizzical (adjective) – उलझन में डालने वाला
Pronunciation: kwizi-k(u)l
Meaning: (of a person’s expression or behaviour) indicating mild or amused puzzlement; amusingly odd or strange
Synonyms: puzzled, perplexed, baffled, questioning, inquiring
Usage: She gave me a quizzical look.

6. chary (adjective) – सतर्क, अनिच्छुक
Pronunciation: cheri
Meaning: cautiously or suspiciously reluctant to do something

Antonym: heedless
Usage: She had been chary of telling the whole truth.

7. brassy (adjective) – तांबे का, कर्कश
Pronunciation: braasi
Meaning: resembling brass in colour; sounding like a brass musical instrument; harsh and loud

Meaning: a close friend or companion
Synonyms: friend, best friend, companion, pal, chum

Usage: The old man and his crony drink in the bar all day.

10. lavish (adjective, verb) – प्रचुर, अपव्ययी
Pronunciation: lav-ish
Meaning: splendid and expensive-looking, elaborate, or luxurious; (of a person) very generous or extravagant; bestow something in generous or extravagant quantities on
