A Proper Strategy to Crack SSC CGL Examination 2018

Dear Aspirants,

SSC CGL examination is one of the most easiest government service examinations. In order to crack this examination, you need to follow a proper strategy for all the 4 sections of the CGL Tier-1 exam.

  1. Quantitative Ability
  2. English
  3. Reasoning
  4. General Awareness

First 2 sections are the most vital ones because they are required for Tier-2 exam also. But you cannot leave section 3 & 4 because they are also very much required for clearing Tier-1 as the competition is increasing day by day. Moreover, sections 3 i.e., Reasoning is undoubtedly the easiest part. With some practice it is quite easy to score 45+ marks out of 50 in this section. For the remaining sections, proper planning is required.

Strategy for Quantitative Aptitude :

  1. See this section from last 2–3 years exam papers and analyze that from which areas questions are being asked in the exam. You can also find such analysis online on various websites.
  2. Purchase a good book and go through all your identified topics .
  3. After you are done with the topics, Take a mock test for this section seriously (take a paper from previous years papers which you haven’t seen earlier and solve this section only).
  4. Always take any exam in a proper exam like condition i.e. sitting alone in a quite atmosphere and completing a particular section in one go.
  5. Maths is a relatively tougher section out of 4 sections. So you must allot 40 to 45 minutes to this section out of the total 2 hrs. duration in the examination.
  6. After you are done with the test. Analyze your performance. This is the most crucial step.
  7. Find those areas where you have done mistakes. Revise the concepts and solve the unsolved questions of the identified areas. Keep taking tests at regular intervals and repeat the above mentioned steps.
  8. Taking more and more tests will definitely improve your speed and working on your identified weak areas will surely improve your overall performance int his area and will help you score good  in this section.

Strategy for English:

In English, basically there are questions related to 3 major areas:

  1. Comprehension (understanding of language) related: Reading Comprehensions followed by questions and Jumbled Paragraph
  2. Vocabulary related: Synonyms-Antonyms, One word substitutions, Idioms-Phrases, Spellings, Fill in the blanks with proper words
  3. Grammar related: Finding errors, Sentence correction
  4. For comprehension related questions, there is no short trick and the only good method is to read newspaper daily for atleast half an hour. No need to read editorials or very tough articles. Read very basic information but reading daily is essential for this part to get understanding of the language. If you are doing this, this part will be the easiest for you in the English section.
  5. Vocabulary related questions play very important role because many questions come from this section (15–20 questions) and many of the candidates lack in this area. Reading newspaper daily will improve your this section too.
  6. Grammar related questions are the most difficult ones in the English section because for these you require proper knowledge of the rules of the English language. A good book is required to cover this area. SP Bakshi’s or Ashok Kumar Singh’s or Neetu Singh’s book is good.
  7. Along with the above mentioned steps keep solving this section from the previous years papers and keep analyzing your performance and focus more on areas which are weak.

Strategy for Reasoning:

  1. As mentioned earlier this is the easiest section of the 4 sections for Tier-1 exam and hence a high score in this section is very much necessary for a good performance.
  2. Only thing required for this section is to solve previous year papers.Solve as many previous years papers as you can.
  3. If there is any particular type of questions which are not able to solve, search on internet and you will be able to find a resource.

Strategy for General Awareness:

  1. This is the most widespread topic of the 4. It has indefinite syllabus. Hence it is advised to work on this section very carefully. You should not give too much time to this section as it can eat into other subject’s time. Also this subject has the least benefit to work ratio. Having said that, you cannot entirely leave this section too as it will play a crucial rule in your total marks.
  2. The best strategy for this part is selective study. Go through last 2–3 years exam papers and find out how many questions from different topics are asked. You may find this analysis on various websites too. Now based on given 3 rules select the areas to be studied:

1st Rule: The number of questions asked in previous years from a particular topic

2nd Rule: Time required for a particular topic (length of a topic)

3rd Rule: Your interest in a particular topic.

Some areas based on the above rules could be Indian Geography, Freedom Struggle, Polity etc.

Hope the above mentioned strategies help you.

All the best for SSC CGL-2018!
